Social Work Internship and Field Experience

In the second semester of the Junior year, students will engage in a field experience combined with a pre-practice seminar (SWK 357 Field Experience). Students are required to volunteer at social service agencies for a minimum of 60 hours for their field experience.

During the Senior year, students will take two field instruction and Seminar courses over the academic year. Students are required to complete a total of 450 field hours at social service agencies, under the supervision of a professional social worker.  This will be combined with 10 hours of field instruction seminar.  Field placements begin in September and end in May.

Admission to Senior Year Field Education Program

Application Procedure

Following the Junior Field Experience, and Pre-Practice Seminar, students must contact the Field Education Office to apply for the Field Education Program.  Students will be provided an IPT Login, where they will complete the application and submit an updated resume. 

  • The Field Education Program application is to be submitted NO LATER than April 16, 2021.
  • Field Education is available to Social Work Majors only.

Prerequisites and Corequisites

In order to enter the Field Education Program in the senior year, students must have completed the following courses and attained a minimum of a 2.5 overall average in completed social work courses in the junior year:

  • SWK 242 Social Work and Christianity
  • SWK 314 Human Behavior in the Social Environment I
  • SWK 324 Foundations of Social Justice
  • SWK 354 Human Behavior in the Social Environment II
  • SWK 355 Social Welfare Policy and Services
  • SWK 357 Field Experience and Pre-Practice Seminar
