Student Governance in the School of Music

  1. Each year, students at the School of Music, Alliance University shall elect two representatives who will address their ideas and concerns to the full-time faculty at monthly meetings.
  2. Members of the Chorale and other large ensembles elect a President each semester to represent their ideas and concerns to the respective Ensemble director.
  3. All students evaluate their Music courses each semester in an anonymous, electronically-submitted survey. These surveys are considered by the Dean and play a part in the total faculty evaluations.
  4. Members of the School of Music participate in the school-wide Student Government.

Health and Wellness in the School of Music

In compliance with the requirement of the National Association Of Schools of Music, found at NASM.arts-accredit.org on pages seven and eight,  the School of Music at Alliance University includes a unit of study on vocal and aural health, as well as skeletal and muscular health, for all types of musicians, in the Freshman Seminar class. Teachers of Applied Music are also required to include health and safety guidelines in their lessons and in Studio Classes. Ensemble directors emphasize safe practices for aural health and vocal health as well.

Student Grievance Procedure

The School of Music at Alliance University utilizes a grievance procedure that complies with the Higher Education Act of 1965, Section 494C (j). This procedure applies to all cases dealing with discrimination by race, handicap, or gender, including harassment, or to any other grievance. In no case will any adverse action be taken against a student for filing a grievance. The final determination of each formal grievance will be made by a person or persons not directly involved in the matter. Because different grievance procedures apply to faculty, staff, and students, consultation of the appropriate handbooks is advised.

Students who have a grievance relative to academic policies, grades given, or other academic judgments should first seek to resolve their complaints with the professor. If resolution is not reached, the matter may be directed to the Director or the Dean of the School of Music. If this does not solve the problem, a formal complaint may be made in writing to the Provost, whose judgment is final. In the case of a grade dispute, adjustments must be made within 45 days of the close of the semester.

A student who has a grievance relative to any area of student life other than academic affairs should first seek to resolve the complaint with the individual involved. If such discussion does not resolve the problem, a formal complaint may be made in writing to the Office of the Dean of Students.

For other types of grievance questions, please see the general Student Handbook of Alliance University.
